It is a fact that in today’s day and age kids coming out of high school have fewer options in regards to a career without some kind of post-high school education. College is not for everyone and a number of young adults that do make it through usually have a degree that proves unlikely to land them a career in their chosen field. Not to mention drowning in student debt and change of interest after they become older. It is also a fact that the average age of qualified technicians that have a skilled construction trade is much higher than it was many years ago. In some states the average age of a plumber is over 50 years old! This number is staggering, but also presents immense opportunity for young adults. There simply just isn’t enough qualified labor to go around and the trades pay very well!
In Las Vegas, we were hit pretty hard in 2008 with the housing crisis and many people left the city to find different jobs or moved to other states where employers were still in need of labor for niche projects. As a city and a company we were affected by this, however we were able to keep the best and grow new employees going forward.
In 2013, Focus Plumbing became members of the Nevada PHCC (Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors Association), which has so much to offer. In a nutshell, the employers hire people interested in plumbing or HVAC. They provide the on the job training while the employee goes to school twice a week. The employees get a degree after four years and qualify to be a Licensed Journeyperson. The best part, you ask? The employer pays for all the schooling! It is an amazing opportunity for young adults and older individuals who are looking for a career change.
At Focus Plumbing, we currently have 28 individuals in school and graduate an average of 4 to 5 per year. We have some phenomenal employees that have obtained their degrees, are making great money, and are happy! They have a skill under their belt in a world that will always need plumbing technicians.
Open enrollment is in June of each year, and we start our selection process about a couple months prior. We can promise that if someone puts forth a good attitude and strong work ethic, we will mentor them and help them succeed and reach their goals.
